The Brazilian Catalyst Society was created at the founding meeting (see Ata of incorporation) on September 18, 1997. However, the trajectory of the creation of SBCat began much earlier, in 1981, when the 1st Catalysis Seminar was held. in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, Catalysis Seminars have been held every two years, a fact that was fundamental not only for the diffusion of catalysis in the different regions of the country, but also for the consolidation of the community and the formation of new research groups. In 1987 the name of the meetings was changed to the Brazilian Catalysis Seminar, reflecting the growth of the area and its capillarity in the most different regions of the country.

At the 8th Brazilian Catalysis Seminar held in Nova Friburgo, it was found that the community already had a sufficient number of participants for the Seminars to be considered as Congresses. On that occasion, Professor Dilson Cardoso proposed by a petition that the name of the event be changed from the Brazilian Catalysis Seminar to the Brazilian Catalysis Congress.

Thus, in 1997, the first of the catalysis congresses, the 9th Brazilian Catalysis Congress in Águas de Lindóia, was held in Água de Lindóia, when the SBCat was created, whose objectives are, in addition to holding the congress every two years, promote the diffusion of catalysis in Brazil. A provisional board formed by Martin Schmal, Dilson Cardoso, Roberto Fernando de Souza and Fernando Leite was created to consolidate the creation of the SBCat, draft a statute and a regiment that would be approved during the 1st General Assembly that took place during the 10th Brazilian Catalysis Congress in Salvador.

By 2022, 22 editions of the Brazilian Catalysis Congress have already been held, we have a community of more than 500 active participants in the Brazilian Catalysis Society, in addition to four Catalysis Regionals. It is with great pride that we see this community grow and increasingly stand out at the national and international level, generating knowledge, training students, promoting scientific discoveries and also, of course, making great scientific partnerships, making friends and recognizing the work of predecessors who idealized and contributed so much to the creation of SBCat.
