Christian LopesLesson: Caracterização - XAS

About: Christian Wittee Lopes studied Industrial Chemistry at the Regional Integrated University of Alto Uruguai and Missões (URI – Erechim). He pursued his master's studies in zeolite synthesis using imidazolium-based ionic liquids under the supervision of Prof. Sibele Pergher at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). He then moved to Valencia, Spain, for his doctoral studies at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ-UPV-CSIC) under the supervision of Prof. Fernando Rey and Dr. Giovanni Agostini. In his thesis, he studied metal-based materials for environmentally related catalytic reactions using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and became an advanced user of large facilities. He obtained his international doctorate after a period at LIKAT (Rostock, Germany) in 2018, and his thesis was awarded with Cum Laude distinction. After completing his doctorate, he returned to Brazil and joined the group of Prof. Katia Bernardo Gusmão at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) as a postdoctoral researcher in 2019. In 2020, he became a Visiting Researcher of PRH 50.1 at the Institute of Chemistry at UFRGS under the Human Resources Program of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP). In 2023, he started his activities as a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Federal University of Paraná. His research focuses on the synthesis of porous materials containing metallic species and their advanced characterization by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy under activation/reaction conditions.

Fernando ReyLesson: Caracterização - Adsorção de gases

About: Professor Fernando Rey (Madrid, 1963) received the degree in chemistry at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1986). Their Ph.D. studies were performed at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ) obtaining his Ph.D. in 1992. The area of research of his Ph.D. Thesis was synthesis, characterization and catalytic applications of hydrotalcites. Subsequently, he joined the group of Prof John M. Thomas from 1993 to 1995 at the Royal Institution of Great Britain as Post Doctoral fellow. During his Post doctoral stay, his research was focused on the development of new ‘in-situ’ characterization tools based on the employ of synchrotron radiation for understanding behaviour of micro- and mesoporous catalysts. He returned to the ITQ in 1995 and one year later he obtained a permanent position at that Institute. He was promoted to Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in 2007. Prof Rey was the director of the Institute of Chemical Technology from 2014 until 2022.

His current area of research is focused in the synthesis and characterization of micro and mesoporous materials with applications in catalysis and adsorption. Along the last ten year, Prof Rey has been involved into the development of appropriated adsorbents for targeted separation processes by controlling the properties of zeolites. This research line has yielded to challenging separations, such as ethane/ethylene, butanol recovery from aqueous ABE mixtures among others, with never seen selectivities.

He is co-author of more than 190 articles in high impact scientific journals and numerous presentations in congresses, and currently his ‘h-index’ is 63. In addition, he is co-inventor in more than 45 patents related to the synthesis of new porous materials and their application in different industrial processes. Some of these patents have been licensed to industries.
